THIS WEEK - The Post-Election Show: Is It Time to Pop the Champagne

Original audio source

Just in case you missed last week’s headlines, the herd announces the election of a new American president. SI asks if Barack Obama’s election will have positive ramifications for freethinkers, humanists and atheists. OG and Chappy speak their minds and SI pulls their ideas together, then ponders whether the election results will change the role of the Religious Right in American politics. (00:00)

How do you vote? Do you use a touch screen, a slot machine, or a paper ballot? OG, SI and Chappy compare and contrast the methods used in various states and discuss whether vote counting is an additive or subtractive process. (20:18)

Why is OG embarrassed? Find out as the herd discusses Prop 8. Fortunately, she gets over her embarrassment in time to reveal the poll results. (36:55)

THIS WEEK - Should Atheist Issues Take a Backseat?

Original audio source

What's happened to half of The Herd? Are they deep undercover somewhere? Choose your Conspiracy in the poll.

With all of the issues going on in the news about the US election and economic crisis, should atheist issues be put on the back burner? Philly and OG weigh in on why the religious crazies haven't been making news and Chappy reminds us why activism is still important. (00:00)

Who's afraid of the big, bad Atheist? Why, Elizabeth Dole is. The Herd weighs in on her smear campaign against Kay Hagan and why she's been able to get away with it so far. (13:44)

After spending most of the podcast on US-centric news The Herd turns its attention to the UK. Are they completely capitulating to religious wackos? And are their religious crazies worse than ours or do we both have something to worry about? (31:30)

Find out the poll results from last week and what's been going on with one of our listeners from down under. Also, has Chappy mastered Evo Mathematics? (42:15)

THIS WEEK - 9/11 and Its Religious Ramifications

Original audio source

So the U.S. is attacked and the very first thing Congress does is sing "God Bless America." Great for freethinkers, eh? Ex wonders whether fundy political clout increased after 9/11. Did lots of people believe that our country was attacked specifically because we're a "Christian" nation? Chappy thinks that for many conservative Jesoids, Christianity is conflated with Americanism. Philly says the ever-growing atheist community should thank George Bush. Is he right? (00:00)

Evo sees an ugly face peeking out of an open window. Relax, though -- it's probably not you. In response, SI teaches the Herd about the "buttfer" test. Ex asks: Is it possible to imagine a world free of religion? Philly can imagine something, but it involves flatulation and butterflies. OG, channeling evangelicals, compares rejecting religion to rejecting Americanism. Are moderate-to-liberal theists partially responsible for the acts of 9/11? Or does the morality of a society shape its religion rather than vice versa? And what does a Chinese menu have to do with anything? (14:10)

Which came first: the disgusting chicken or the rotten egg? Are nationalism and religion related? Who's persecuting whom? More important question: Can people ever stop playing "the Game"? And why does everybody hate atheists -- particularly Chappy?(30:22)

Another Goddamned Puzzle is solved with the help of some fictional characters, but Ex imagines having to console some puzzlers about his con job for next week. Talk about wack-a-doo ideas: Amazingly, 51% of the world's population believes that Evo exists. Whoever "Evo" is, he (or she) poses a science question about climate change. Why not give it a try while you're still comfortable? (48:19)

THIS WEEK - Funny, She Doesn't Look Woo-ish

Original audio source

Sarah Palin likes shooting defenseless animals. Let's see if she can handle the Herd! Does experience matter? If so, how? Philly and Evo argue that Palin used her little bit of experience in a very authoritarian way, but Ex calls "bullshit" on them. Who's right? Meanwhile SI doesn't think 120,000 total votes and being governor for a year and a half is much experience. Ex sees an insidious strategy that the GOP may be using. (00:00)

OG would rather talk about issues than experience, and the Herd agrees. Obviously, that's a signal for a segue to a conversation about Palin's religiosity. How might her love of Jesus inform her decisions? What will be its effects on separation of church & state? Is (are?) the Assemblies of God scary? (Do moose shit in the woods while they're hiding from Sarah Palin?) Chappy and Evo sound very, very afraid. Believe it or not, Ex tries to assuage their fears. How fucking reassuring do you think that is? Yikes! (19:00)

Can Democrats attack Palin on her fundy ideas? Or have they painted themselves into a church corner? Philly would like to see the Dems go straight for her craziness, but understands it ain't happening. Instead, he offers a few politically feasible tactics. Can Obama/Biden just practice what they preach and let the public judge the difference between their particular god and Palin's? And do atheists have to bite the Christianized bullet? (Will it bleed if we do so?) (33:44)

Three Goddamned Solvers cracked last week's puzzle, one with the help of his ... well, we can't give everything away in these notes. Hint: zombies were not involved. Want to be deliriously happy for the rest of your life? The results of our poll may tell you how! And Evo wonders: Where are the science lovers in our audience? (Possible answer: getting happy?) (49:40)

THIS WEEK - "Creation Care," Ethanol ... and Evo Screws Up

Original audio source

We have a special guest this week: Shrike, president of his local Audubon Society chapter and an active environmentalist for more than 30 years. The Herd asks him to tell us about the new green movement among evangelical Christians. Is the fundies' approach to saving the planet different from the traditional one? Do Christian bears shit in the woods? Chew on this phrase: Creation Care. Will the environmental movement be hijacked by a religious agenda? Shrike is willing to use all the help he can get. (0:00)

Or is he? Ex, fretting about religionists' involvement, poses a challenge. Would Shrike be willing to start his Audubon Society meetings with a prayer? The lifetime environmentalist doesn't have to think twice about his answer, but can you predict what it is? We wonder: If evangelicals are around, won't they ... duh ... evangelize? Philly worries what Shrike and others would be called if they walked away. (14:20)

SI finds a Creation Care website that looks mighty religious to him. After our disclaimer about Democrat bashing, we bash Obama. On ethanol. Shrike is not happy with this bogus response to the energy/environmental crisis. He likes his corn flakes and hopes a Democratic Congress will resolve this. The cynical Herd doubts that it will happen. (26:04)

Another Goddamned Puzzle, Poll and Quiz. Atheists need poetry, huh? Well, at least a different combination of those letters. Is Evo actually bright enough to be testing our listeners? We give a marginal thumbs-up to Atheist Nexus. Our conclusion: Join, but don't expect any miracles! However, do feel free to become a member of our group there. THIS WEEK - The Pompous-Driven Political Campaign

Original audio source

Ex doesn't need any prodding from a man down-under to get pissed off about McCain and Obama making their first joint appearance in a CHURCH! Can't you hear, can't you hear the thunder? Rick Warren, of The Purpose-Driven Life fame, claims both candidates as friends, and will soon host a pious party from his pulpit. OG informs us about Warren's book, which we urge listeners not to rush out and buy. The Herd, as usual, fulminates. Is this unsubdued enough for you, Sean? (0:00)

Our AGP Fundogelical Correspondent, OG, gives us some deep background on the fleecing of America. Philly reminds us that it's all about power. SI asks: Isn't that why government and religion go so easily hand-in-hand? We all see a number of infuriating church/state conflicts at Warren's Saddleback Church Political Extravaganza. So what can freethinkers do about all of this besides our usual bitching and belly-aching. Evo tells about an excellent idea he tried, but did it work? If you're a proper cynic, you'll guess the answer. (17:22)

Now what? SI wants to use this podcast as a tool. Shall we add it to our atheistic Swiss Army knives? Ex opens a pet shop, and Philly finds a way to compare Saddleback Church to NAMBLA and the American Nazi Party. OG asks the question: Isn't showing up at a Christian Church, and only a Christian Church, a de facto religious test? Doesn't that fly in the face of the Constitution's Article VI? Maybe, but who's gonna sue? (34:23)

Another Goddamned Puzzle. Man, you folks are smart (which our scientific poll later confirms). But you're funny, too! Some listeners work together to give last week's solution, and Yunshui adds a special surprise of his own. Evo awards the 3rd AGP Medal of Honor; find out who got it and why. SI tips everyone off to a good series of articles on evolution. Finally, why we love Darwin but hate being called "Darwinists." (50:59)

THIS WEEK - McCain, Obama, Anyone Else? Oh Well, There's Always Beer!

Lately, we've been avoiding having full-blown discussions about politics. But this week we can't resist looking at a few issues related to the '08 elections in the U.S. Ex wants to know if McCain has anything to offer the American people. You might find some of the answers surprising! Would a President McCain still pander to a religious base that didn't support him in the election? Then: Given that we all agree Obama would be marginally better than McCain, why do we tend to give him such a hard time? Can you say "pissed off," boys and girls? (0:00)

Obama's brand: Change. But it now comes with a secret ingredient: No-change-o. Does anyone buy that "change" line anymore? Was his FISA vote a deal-breaker for you? It was for some of the Herd. We discuss why that single vote was so important to us as atheists, freethinkers, and lovers of the Constitution. Some of us theorize about what was behind it, but what the fuck do we know? (15:18)

We look at the American political system and examine why it's so difficult for third-party candidates to get elected. Lots of voters seem to want choices besides the Demopublicans, yet it's hard to find a viable standard-bearer for the great idea of ... what? Can any of us suggest a political position that a potentially successful third party might embrace? Philly explains how he thinks a new party could get off the ground. Ex, though, seems fixated on dogcatchers. (28:18)

Another Goddamned Puzzle and Another Goddamned Poll and Another Goddamned Ten Minutes of Your Life spent listening to this drivel. In our free-for-all ranting segment, our resident artist is annoyed at the reactions to
The New Yorker's Obama cover and the resulting controversy about visual satire. We see this as yet another problem fed by the Left as well as the Right. Evo tells about a college instructor who lost his job because he told his class that the Adam-and-Eve story was a fable. Somehow this leads us back to a brief discussion of the tragic and infuriating case of Madeline Neumann. (46:12)

THIS WEEK - For Elitists Only

[NOTE TO PHARYNGULISTAS: We take pride in our "cussing," although we'd never use such a cutesy, low-brow term for "saying 'fuck.'" You might like some of the other words we use, too, as well as the way we string them together to form thought-provoking ideas. If you're not an elitist, though, you may not be able to follow the conversation. Be warned.]

Ex pulls teeth (especially with SI) to get the entire Herd to agree that we are elitists. After brow-beaten SI gives in, we discuss what, exactly, an elitist is. Is it all about greater intellect and finer taste? And what's the difference between elitism and snobbishness? As atheists, are we automatically unholier than thou? Evo says, "if you believe in supernatural causations...I'm superior". And the members of our snooty Herd all agree on that one. Someone forgets to kill the sound during our first break, and we find out which one of us is the most elitist. (0:00)

How do we manifest our elitism in our non-Internet lives? Evo is a smarty-pants. SI is more cagey, except maybe with his wife! Ex thinks he's smarter than the average bear and more valuable. Why is it a bad thing in our culture to be better at something? Would most Americans rather vote for a person who is a reflection of them rather than someone who is clearly "better" than they are? Once again, the mic runs during our break, and listeners are treated to a short Philly Rant. (15:13)

Ex wants to know what there is in our elitism that makes us angry at various things in society. Not surprisingly, we're mostly pissed off at the anti-intellectual culture of the United States. Our engineer decided that our arrogance is too delicious to resist, so we have yet another candid break. Evo claims that more damage was done to our society by Bush's response to 9/11 than by the attacks. (33:02)

Ex, always fascinated by whether like-types can spot each other, asks if we can automatically recognize other elitists. We give the answer to Another Goddamned Puzzle from last week and announce the winners of our AGP Secret Decoder Ring. There were two neither of whom was named Venjanz. Find out why poor Yunshui may not be happy about that. Poll results revealed and yet ANOTHER reason you may not want Evo singing in your neighborhood. Is it elitist to mention a few items in the news? We think not. (48:57)

THIS WEEK - Evangelicals for Israel, the Rapture, and a Big Ape

Pastor John Hagee and his ilk – why would the State of Israel in general, or Jews specifically, think this blowhard is their friend? We look at the many things he (and other fundamentalist Christians) do and say. They're repulsive, right? So is gaining their financial and moral support worthwhile for Israelis when it means having to stomach their hateful rhetoric. Can the meddling of the American evangelicals cause bad things to happen in the Middle East? Our biblical authority, OG, shows us how the “end times” crowd has the scriptures wrong. (0:00)

What is the “rapture” all about and who thought it up? Does the human brain have the ability to justify bogus "truths" in religion -- and in politics? How can a leader strongly influence beliefs in others, even without the ability to back his claims up intellectually? In this regard, we compare our current political players to religious leaders. No surprise: The Herd gets pissed off again. (32:05)

Ex tells a story about sticking his foot into his atheistic mouth at a party. Now that he finds himself back among friends, he asks: Can an intelligent person be religious? Philly wonders which came first, the religious chicken or the stupid egg? How do people who had the misfortune of being born into a highly charged religious environment fit into this picture? Evo hypothesizes that compartmentalizing may be a factor in the religiousness/dumbth phenomenon. Ex disagrees. Philly can't take his eyes off the 1,000 lb. gorilla sitting in the corner. (30:24)

Evo rethinks his hypothesis about compartmentalization and re-defines what he means by it. SI kicks in with what the Herd agrees to be a nice analogy. We review the interesting results of our latest “scientific” poll. Ex unveils a new feature of Another Goddamned Podcast. Have fun – win prizes (sort of). (48:14)

THIS WEEK - Presidents, Lies, Voters ... and the Boy Scouts

What's the responsibility of the President in accurately educating the public on matters of government policy? Or on anything, for that matter? SI states the case for a teacher-prez, but Ex takes a somewhat controversial position. The rest of the Herd, including special guest Chappy, weigh in. (00:00)

How vigilant is the voting public about our elected officials telling us the truth? What can the electorate do? Chappy is optimistic about the possibilities, but SI punctures her balloon. We also look at our compliant press. (14:13)

One of us thinks voters should have to take a test before casting their ballots. Is there an elitist in the house? Find out who he or she is. (If you're a regular listener, try to guess beforehand.) Do Americans lack intellectual curiosity and necessary basic knowledge? Most of the Herd argues that you can’t force the electorate to make informed decisions. (30:24)

OG is annoyed at The Boy Scouts of America Centennial Commemorative Coin Act. Does she have Scout-envy, or is there something insidious at work in the proposed legislation? We briefly discuss the history of B.S.A.'s B.S. Evo ably sums up the Herd's position, and, for once, Ex and SI refrain from embellishing. But someone tries to earn the sound-effects merit badge. THIS WEEK – The Chaplain on Deconversion ... and W on "Deal or No Deal"

The Herd interrogates fellow member of the Atheosphere - The Chaplain. This is our offering to any aspiring atheist who is somewhat skittish about the process of freeing himself or herself from superstition. (0:00)

We delve into the deconversion of the Chaplain and are surprised to find out what evolution had to do with it. (16:29)

Chappy tells us about her religious background and how she began moving away from it. "Put a nickel on the drum, save another drunken bum"... None of the Herd knows much about the Salvation Army and Chappy enlightens us. John Wilkes Booth wasn't the only holy horror with that surname back in 1865. Ex wants to know if Chappy is now trying to "save" religious folks. (32:31)

Why all the great Christian authors couldn't persuade the Chaplain to avoid atheism. Which atheist screeds had an impact on her. Making a clean break - denial, grief, anger, and finally acceptance. Moving into the Atheosphere and dealing with family and friends. Hiding the atheistic porn. (51:02)

Finally, what the fuck is "W" doing appearing on game shows and why do we need to know which celebrities support each of the candidates? Who is a bigger turn-off, Barbara Streisand or Oprah Winfrey? (1:02:02)

THIS WEEK – Abortions, Faith-Based Initiatives, and Debating the Debate

As surprising as listeners may find this, Ex is pissed off! He tears into the recent Compassion Forum (renaming it the Compulsion Forum). Although he has several beefs (or is it "beeves"?) he and Philly zero in on the candidates' responses to questions on abortion. (0:00)

Obama says that abortion is a "moral decision" and a "wrenching choice." Are there any actual moral issues involved in abortions early in the pregnancy, or is the word "moral" just Obama's way of pandering to the religious? (15:57)

Faith-based initiatives and Establishment. We all pretty much agree with James Madison, even though he was not an atheist blogger. (32:18)

Attacks on Obama: why has he shown an utter inability to handle them better? Does he appear as un-Presidential to you as he does to Ex? What should he be saying in his own defense? Evo wonders whether Obama modifies his debating style because of perceived racial prejudices that he faces. But OG counters that it's really Hillary who has a tougher bias to overcome. The boys gang up on OG, badgering her to accept there is no anti-feminist sentiment in the electorate. Then, Philly tells the herd why he would accept an invitation to a religious forum if he were a candidate. (51:07)

Normally, this spot in the podcast would be devoted to out-takes. In this podcast, however, it's just more in-put. During a long break, the Herd can't seem to abort its discussion. (1:10:54)

THIS WEEK – Free Speech, Fred Phelps, Sneaky OG ... and the AGP Medal of Honor

The Westboro Baptist Church may have to close up shop. Hooray! Or ... wait a minute. Is free speech inviolable? The Herd takes SI to task for his published position on the Fred Phelps case. (0:00)

More on free speech and Nazis, and Fred Phelps. (16:35)

Well, speech may be free -- but does it have to go on for so long? The discussion finally draws to a close. (34:14)

The Herd's original vision for this podcast, in Philly's words, was a Heretic Happy Hour. Frequently, we find one another so stimulating and/or annoying that we can't resist shooting the shit even when we're not bantering about the week's agreed-upon topics. OG, our sneaky engineer and editor, often records these encounters. Here's a segment of one such conversation. (40:23)

THIS WEEK – Atheists, Agnostics, Antitheists ... and Superstitious "Rationalists"

Listener Venjanz asks the Herd to explain what we mean when we say "atheist," "agnostic," or "antitheist." We begin a discussion of these terms, not in reference to their dictionary definitions, but in reference to what they mean to us when we use them in our writing and our conversation. We briefly examine the concept of evidence. (0:00)

The discussion continues. Ex wonders if we shouldn't call ourselves "a-fideists." SI claims that "god" is a term for the entire supernatural realm. But OG points out that everyone, atheists included, may have some superstitious beliefs. (16:52)

More on atheists and superstititon. Philly thinks it's possible to be an atheist and still not be a skeptic. Do any of us carry a rabbit's foot, or wear a lucky shirt? Evo is skeptical about that. Somehow the conversation comes around to Mac vs. PC, vanilla vs. chocolate, and rationalizations in general. Knock on wood, it stays pretty lively. (31:23)

Poll results. Ex fulminates about the poll-takers and accuses them of irrational rationalizing. Evo disagrees. (48:49)

You're Lucky That It Wasn't Podcast #7(A)

For any of our listeners who are curious what we do in our spare time, here's an example of the kinds of emails we send each other. This was a long discussion between Ex and Philly, prompted by Barack Obama's speech on Monday.

Ex:
The oration was great, politically brilliant. But it was also coldly calculated to bring in all the right themes and skip the ones that might offend his audience. "Yeah, the Constitution's great. Oh, I'm not going to actually bother to quote it, because it has some of those really nasty ideas in it like the Establishment Clause and Freedom of Speech."

The performance was a modern version of a shuck-and-jive: You know us ma'am; we does get excited in that church of our'n.

When a candidate goes out of his way to sell himself as a committed Christian and panders to the worst religious elements, when he uses the pulpit to make political speeches as Obama has done in this race, and when he talks about the church as if it's some kind of ethnic imperative for all blacks (read the speech again if you didn't catch it the first time), that's a big fucking deal-breaker for me.

It's the Theocracy, Stupid.

Philly:
1. That's a grossly mistaken view
2. You'd find a way to condemn any speech if it contained any religious reference whatsoever

FDR's inaugural speech, the famous "The only thing we have to fear..." speech, he mentioned god 3 times and made numerous references to the bible like "plague of locusts", "the money changers have fled from their high seats in the temple", and "we may now restore that temple to the ancient truths". He also made a couple of those "Yeah, the Constitution's great. Oh, I'm not going to actually bother to quote it, because it has some of those really nasty ideas in it like the Establishment Clause and Freedom of Speech" phrases as well.

Btw in case you missed it, Obama showed it isn't just blacks that get angry but lower and middle class whites, and we all have ample reason to.

He spoke of improving Education twice, and not in a glib Republican way. He spoke of it as an investment in the future and tied current problems to the sad state of many schools. He also spoke of taking responsibility for yourself and your future and tried to convey the idea that your success needn't come at someone else's expense. But of course he said "god" twice, so all that's fucking meaningless because of this "deal-breaker". Yup, your fucking right I guess. Who needs any of that shit? Let's just write your name in and sit smug in our satisfaction that we really showed those fuckers.

Ex:
FDR's speech is immaterial. I'm not holding him up as a shining model, and never would. His speeches are full of Christian slop. But I remind you, old timer, that his first inaugural was delivered in 1933. That was 75 years ago. Everyone knew back then that atheists were all Communists.

You've gone and oversimplified what I wrote. Obama said a lot of good things. Yay, him, He also had a long section where he basically used the disgusting stereotype that church is what holds the black community together.

People began to shout, to rise from their seats and clap and cry out, a forceful wind carrying the reverend's voice up into the rafters. And in that single note, hope! I heard something else; at the foot of that cross, inside the thousands of churches across the city, I imagined the stories of ordinary black people merging with the stories of David and Goliath, Moses and Pharaoh, the Christians in the lion's den, Ezekiel's field of dry bones. Those stories of survival, and freedom, and hope became our story, my story; the blood that had spilled was our blood, the tears our tears; until this black church, on this bright day, seemed once more a vessel carrying the story of a people into future generations and into a larger world. Our trials and triumphs became at once unique and universal, black and more than black; in chronicling our journey, the stories and songs gave us a means to reclaim memories that we didn't need to feel shame about memories that all people might study and cherish and with which we could start to rebuild.

That has been my experience at Trinity. Like other predominantly black churches across the country, Trinity embodies the black community in its entirety the doctor and the welfare mom, the model student and the former gang-banger. Like other black churches, Trinity's services are full of raucous laughter and sometimes bawdy humor. They are full of dancing, clapping, screaming and shouting that may seem jarring to the untrained ear. The church contains in full the kindness and cruelty, the fierce intelligence and the shocking ignorance, the struggles and successes, the love and yes, the bitterness and bias that make up the black experience in America.

I can no more disown him than I can disown the black community.

Beautiful poetry, well-written and forceful. It would make me want to clap if I didn't actually take a moment to think about the unspoken message of the content. But if that were said about "the white community" -- some mythical construct -- you'd be screaming bloody murder. This is cover-your-ass stuff that Obama's speaking here, and it's limited to only some blacks, not all. The Harlem Renaissance movement was rife with atheists. There's a long history of black doubters, freethinkers, agnostics, and atheists -- but Obama doesn't allude to it at all. Go ahead and Google "black atheists" to see plenty of African Americans today who Obama did not acknowledge in any way in his speech. To say that blacks need their churches is just as ridiculous as saying that whites need their churches.

And I'd like to know where in the bible there's a discussion of "the Christians in the lion's den." Hint: NOWHERE. It's bullshit, made up by Christians to work backwards to the story of Daniel. If Obama doesn't know this, he's ignorant about the old testament, ignorant in an insidious Christians-only way.

So you can go cheer all you want, but I'll stand around and boo as loudly as I can. I don't give a fuck what Jeremiah Wright said about the country. I care that he said it under the aegis of a church and that Obama, the committed Christian, was sitting there eating that Jesus shit up. Just the same way that Hillary was ladling it into herself at her church and McCain was gorging on it at his. And that's why atheists have to put up with god crap every single day in this country, because our representatives still have their heads filled with garbage from an odious series of myths written thousands of years ago. And I think that if those myths influence a president's thinking, he or she can't be an effective leader in today's world, in 2008, with the globe threatened by theocracies. That's why I'm a one-issue guy and will continue to be so -- until religion is no longer a looming danger to all of us.

But just for you and Evo, I'll reserve judgment until the Science Debate and the Religious Compassion Forum. A courageous appearance at the former would go a long way toward making me take a new look at Obama, whether or not he also appears at the latter. I think the best we can hope is that he'll agree to attend neither. But if he appears at the Forum only, fuck him.

Do you want to make any bets about his decision? How about the stakes being our votes? If Obama attends the Science Debate under any circumstances, I'll swallow hard and vote for him if he's the Democratic Candidate. If he attends the Religious Compassion Forum only, then you suck it up and vote for a write-in or some third party.

Philly:
Oh I'm sorry, I oversimplified "You know us ma'am; we does get excited in that church of our'n." ? YOU didn't even have to listen because you still haven't and probably never will get over that fucking "committed christian" thing so don't talk to me about oversimplifying. Furthermore Mr. ancient history, who pulls Supreme Court Justice nominations out of the distant past to make a point, and you're going to give me crap for citing FDR? Honestly, I went back to FDR because, sadly, I couldn't think of many truly powerful Presidential speeches in recent history.

As to the bit you quoted, what the fuck was he supposed to talk about, and why would he bring up "oh and there's some great black atheists, too"? He's there to put fucking Wright in context and to explain his position in relation to him, is he not? And no, he didn't give one of those retarded Romney speeches saying church is necessary like you're charging.

The christians in the lion's den is not biblical but it's not total bullshit either. It's playing on the stories about Roman persecution but yeah, I'm sure they love the connection to Daniel.

I know your stance and I know you think doing nothing is preferable than voting and endorsing what you see as harmful but I'm still holding to the fact that doing nothing is the greater harm.

Ex:
No, you didn't oversimply my characterization of Obama's speech as shuck-and-jive. That's what it was. And you're totally right that I can't get over that "committed Christian" thing. I want a president who's a committed rationalist. Whatever part of his brain is committed to Christianity is unfit to use reason when he has to make life-and-death decisions.

Now, you can't have it both ways, Philly. On one hand you've said that Obama's speech was "to put fucking Wright in context and to explain his position in relation to him," which would be an entirely bullshit cover-your-ass exercise no matter how beautifully phrased. On the other hand you've implied that the speech was intended to say something serious about America, which would be a commendable effort if Obama hadn't painted all blacks as ignorant church-goers, which is a lie.

The speech was a combination of a lot of things, but it was mostly -- and I think we'd both agree about this -- an attempt by Obama to extricate himself from a sticky situation. I'm saying that (1) if he weren't so taken with religion and trying to prove how tight he is with Jesus, he wouldn't have been in the sticky situation in the first place; (2) he attempted to minimize the impact of what he had been listening to for years in church by playing on the worst stereotype of happy darkies losing themselves in the lawd; and (3) he threw around the phrase "the Constitution," but the whole underlying rationale of his speech is, to me anyway, clearly in opposition to one of its key principles: the separation of church and state. The speech marries church and state and sends them off on a honeymoon together. I fear that the same thing will happen if Obama is elected.

Now, this is a small detail, but not small to me because of your response. I'll challenge you on your explanation of the "Christians in the lion's den." All the rest of the stories Obama refers to are biblical ones. He just fucked up on that "Christians" business either out of ignorance or out of a desire to sneakily slip in a reference to persecuted Christians. In either case, if that appeared on a blog somewhere, spouted by some iggys and mariannes as a story from the bible, you'd be the first one to call them on it. You'd probably point out how ignorant they are for not even knowing the very book that they're slinging around. So how come nobody's making you say that in reference to a guy who could well be the next president? It's so completely out of character for you of all people to explain that reference away. Why are you giving Obama a free pass?

Anyway, let's not go back and forth on this over and over. Are you not taking my bet? Do me a favor and go on the record to say whether you are or aren't, just so nobody can come back in a few weeks and say to either of us, "but you made a bet."

Philly
:
Ex: I can have it both ways. He can, in a speech putting Wright in context and justifying his position with Wright, say something about America. In fact, I thought is was quite brilliant to turn it into a cry for action by basically saying blacks, whites and everyone else are justified in being angry and frustrated only instead of expressing that sentiment incorrectly like Wright, everyone needs to face the real problems and channel that sentiment towards dealing with them.

To the numbered points:
1) He was in the sticky situation because a mentor of his said inflammatory shit. By your logic, if I were campaigning, atheism would be at fault because it's why I know you and we both know I'd surely have to be making excuses for some of your inflammatory comments. ;)
2) He wasn't using the "lawd" as the excuse but rather the church as the setting to express the anger and frustration they have from the real world. Yes, he mentions bible stories told which paralleled their reality, but it's that parallel, not the bible on its own, that whipped up the fervor. In that context, the bible stories are no different than being whipped into a fervor from the theater.
3) Yes he cites ideas from religion, but they're not unique to religion: "do unto others as we would have them do unto us. Let us be our brother’s keeper, Scripture tells us. Let us be our sister’s keeper. Let us find that common stake we all have in one another, and let our politics reflect that spirit as well." I do hate that he's going with positive Golden Rule, of course and yes, I'd rather he cite Shakespeare or even the Star Trek Prime Directive but oh well.

On the lion's den, YOU are insisting that they're all from the bible and were that what he said then yes, I'd call him on it. He said "stories". Ministers tell stories and OFTEN cite real world events. I have no doubt stories of christians killed for entertainment in the Colosseum were told.

I'm not trying to defend him exactly, but the point that we need to get beyond bullshit and face real problems. Yes, I think religion is definitely one of them but it's hardly the only one. I think you're blind to the bigger picture by your near-sighted hatred of religion. I hate religious belief as well, but I'm not going to condemn someone for having it or expressing it, only imposing it and/or asserting it superior to any other or no belief.

I skipped over the bet last time. Now that I see it, I won't take it. Why? Because that's a shitty way to get someone to vote your way. I wouldn't want you voting against your own opinions just because of which debate he agrees to. I may care about you throwing away your vote, but to trick or compel you to do what I think is right? Such a suggestion is beneath us. I'd rather take a sillier bet, like having to listen to Evo sing a complete song.

SI:
On the merits of your debate, I'll simply say that the rationalist in me agrees with Ex, but the realist in me agrees with Philly.

Ex:
I think SI's right. You're being practical; I'm being -- depending on how you want to spin it -- idealistic or unrealistic. It's odd for me to use either of those adjectives about myself, but, I guess, in this situation they're true. However ... I'll live with them both. My top priority is to not feed the theocracy.

I'm still open to the possibility that Obama will change my mind if he addresses issues that concern me. And that was really what my snide bet was about. If Obama positions himself as a man of science and reason, which I think would unfortunately be political suicide, I'd be happy to support him. And, actually, I'm guessing that you're open to changing your mind if the guy starts sounding more and more like some religious wingnut. So let's see how the rest of the election plays out. For the time being, my intention is to write myself in or vote for a third party candidate, and do it as loudly -- via my blog and personal conversations -- as I can. Your intention, also for the time being, is to support Obama. But we've both still got plenty of time to re-evaluate. I don't think either of us will, but let's say that the door's still ever so slightly ajar.

As far as Evo singing a complete song: I'd never have the cold, calculating ruthlessness to expose any gambler to that!

Philly:
So in order to win your vote, Obama has to commit political suicide? Damn, you're a hard sell. LOL
