Another Goddamned Podcast #25:
July 31, 2008

THIS WEEK - Angry Atheists

Original audio source

We welcome Chappy back, and then immediately attack her. Why? Well, she's been on the warpath lately and we'd like to know what she's so angry about. It turns out that OG and SI are mad about the very same thing. The other three of us may be even more furious, but for different reasons. Philly and Evo articulate theirs. Listeners are urged to form a circle and join hands. (0:00)

Ex, great sage that he is, tells us all why we're really pissed off, and we see that there are "three flavors of our discontent." OK, so how do we deal with our anger? Does our rage make us "strike out" at religionists, both in the blogosphere and in real life? Urging calm, some members of the Herd argue that we should remain logical. Philly makes an insightful point about theist arguments, which leads us to discuss the role of education in deconversion. (14:26)

Higher education is our continued focus, and we find out how it freed OG. Can it work that way on others? Ex remains rankled. Does religion require ignorance of worldly knowledge? Evo points out that there's probably nothing more worldly for a theist to do than ... what? (29:44)

Another Goddamned Puzzle is solved, but Venjanz needs a shave. Sean sends an audio file, complete with gratuituous wisecracks. In our new poser: No man is an island, but someone gets stuck on one. Evo offers a little Science Quiz, for which fantastic prizes will be awarded! (Well, our definition of "fantastic" might be a little different than yours.) Philly explains how Scientology is like the Mafia. Finally, we award a mini-medal of honor - to one of our own listeners. Find out what she did to earn it. (46:22)

I'm surprised that you mentioned Tim McVeigh, the shit about him being a "Christian terrorist" has been debunked for years. He was a nut, period.

In his letter, McVeigh said he was an agnostic but that he would "improvise, adapt and overcome", if it turned out there was an afterlife. "If I'm going to hell," he wrote, "I'm gonna have a lot of company." His body is to be cremated and his ashes scattered in a secret location.

On another note... have you guys ever wondered WHY almost all of the teachers and professors at public and private (non-religious) universities in this country are nearly universally Liberal and/or Leftists politically?

It's a complex question. I think that most people with above average intelligence tend to be more liberal (note the small "l", rather than a large "L" which would denote 'progressivism').

And let me give two words to you, Evo: Blow me.

And what's with me needed a shave?

I would tend to agree, on the average, but whenever a Liberal or a liberal says this, it sounds elitist and condescending.

Nice! And it didn't even take you a half dozen tries to get a good shot in!

and: And what's with me needed a shave?

I have no idea. Have you asked Occam?

Re:Playing with dolls

Don't you opress me! Every man (or woman)has the right to play with barbies.

Seriously was did you not get the Paul Hogan reference?

Thoroughly entertaining show. What am I angry about - FUCKING teen challenge starting up in my home town

PhillyChief said...

What's "Fucking Teen Challenge"? Is that anything like "Girls Gone Wild"?

I used to be a big fan of the Six Million Dollar Man (give me a break, I was like 6 years old). So I had my Steve Austin Figures and Oscar Goldman with his exploding briefcase and wanted every damn thing associated with that show (yes, marketing to children works). I remembered my neighbor (who was a girl) had a Steve Austin and a Bionic Woman. I asked her, "you can have both?" She said, "yeah, why not?" So I asked for a Bionic Woman but was flatly told that was WRONG! Had I known what homophobia was back then, I would have quickly asked for the Big Foot figure to exploit my parent's fear. Big Foot was expensive. I did get a new web climbing Spiderman shortly after that, so it wasn't all bad. Thank you religion inspired homophobia!

Star Wars figures were big when I was a kid. I had barbies, but I never got a Ken. So I cut the hair short on one of my barbies and made her into the guy. Yeah, that made for some uncomfortable explaining from my parents.

Sean:
We didn't need the Paul Hogan reference. Here in the U.S. of A. we've got a chain of ersatz Outback restaurants that talk about throwing another shrimp on the barbie. But shit, just for you I even looked up "chooks" and "dunny." Not that I'll ever use those words in casual conversation.

Philly:
That homophobia story reminds me of one I heard from a friend of mine. All her life, she'd been an avid feminist, spouting off at every opportunity about the evils of gender stereotypes. When her oldest son was about four, she took him to buy some sneakers, and he threw a fit because he wanted pink ones. She admitted that, despite all her intellectual arguments to the contrary, his choice creeped her out. But she couldn't figure out a "reasonable" way to talk him out of his color preference, so for a few months he walked around with pink footsies while she tried not to act mortified.

PhillyChief said...

Well I wouldn't let any boy of mine have a Bionic woman or pink sneakers, at least not until he finished a few years of Kung Fu. After that, he can appear as fruity as he wants. ;)

Now that I think about it, 6 was about when my dad first taught me how to fight. I wonder if that was before or after my Bionic Woman request. Hmmm...

Philly, look up teen challenge exposed - and it's work safe.

It's more evangelical amercian crap exported to Aus. When we will you stop, I know we gave you Ken Ham but come on - uncle already!

Kiddies toys can perhaps offer some insight into one's future sexual proclivities... When my brother finally came out (aged about 18), he was shocked to discover that I seemed completely unfazed. Why? he asked. I told him that I'd known for years - I collected He-Man figures and Transformers as a child, he collected She-Ra and Sylvanian Families... the math was pretty straightforward.

I guess I should be thankful that Mum & Dad didn't ever get us one of these...

That thing is hysterical. Glow in the dark hands. Very nice. I like the description:
The 2 miracles represented by this deluxe action figure show that he also sought to fill the basic needs of his friends and followers.
Yes, getting drunk is a basic need.

The review by Zagnorch is great.

My God, y'all are such fags.

Sean's queer country (Austria) didn't even invade Indonesia after the Muslim Bali bombings. Don't you even care about the Jews in Sri Lanka?

Philly said something about 'wild teen girls fucking'(OK so you're not a fag), Evo wants to shave me...

SI has that 'tucked' dude from Silence of the Lambs as his avatar... jeeze.

At least the two women on here, Ex and OG, knows what everybody is talking about.

Peace and soul.

PhillyChief said...

Peace is gay. You're clearly a fag, Venjanz. Your avatar should be a rainbow, a pair of waving jazz hands, or perhaps a log cabin. You do claim to be Republican, don't you? Not that there's anything wrong with all that, btw (being gay that is, not Republican, that's not ok).
