Another Goddamned Podcast #10:
April 10, 2008

THIS WEEK – Free Speech, Fred Phelps, Sneaky OG ... and the AGP Medal of Honor

The Westboro Baptist Church may have to close up shop. Hooray! Or ... wait a minute. Is free speech inviolable? The Herd takes SI to task for his published position on the Fred Phelps case. (0:00)

More on free speech and Nazis, and Fred Phelps. (16:35)

Well, speech may be free -- but does it have to go on for so long? The discussion finally draws to a close. (34:14)

The Herd's original vision for this podcast, in Philly's words, was a Heretic Happy Hour. Frequently, we find one another so stimulating and/or annoying that we can't resist shooting the shit even when we're not bantering about the week's agreed-upon topics. OG, our sneaky engineer and editor, often records these encounters. Here's a segment of one such conversation. (40:23)

Introducing the AGP Medal of Honor, which is awarded to its first recipient. This week's poll results are not really a surprise. (1:03:23)

Opening Music [00:00]: excerpt from "Another Goddamned Draft"
Bridge Music [15:33]: excerpt from "Swing to the Left"
Bridge Music [31:27]: excerpt from "The Atheist's Hymn"
Bridge Music [39:49]: excerpt from "Middle Earth"
Bridge Music [1:04:01]: excerpt from "Arkansas Traveler"
Closing Music [1:06:53]: excerpt from "As Jazzy as I Get"

Good discussion. Did I catch some Libertarian overtones here? Ex, I'm looking at you.

It's really refreshing to listen to something like your podcast, because too many of the Lib main stream blogs and news aggregation communities like Reddit are full of atheist bomb-throwers and frothing-at-the-mouth haters.

Death to all extremists!

There's no surprise if you heard libertarian overtones, although I'd be surprised if you heard Libertarian overtones. I'm an extreme libertarian when it comes to the First Amendment, and what I'd consider a strong libertarian on most other Bill of Rights issues.

I'm with you 100% there.

Have you seen this political scale?

Authoritarian Left ----- Authoritarian Right
__________________________________
Libertarian Left ------- Libertarian Right

Stalin falls into the Authoritarian Left; Hitler and Thatcher fall into the Authoritarian Right; Gandhi falls into the Libertarian Left (as do I, he's obviously in great company); Friedman falls into the Libertarian Right.

Have any of you read this book about Skokie?

The deacon attended the 9/11 service at the National Cathedral. He still has the invitation, addressed to him personally, on White House stationery. He wore his Salvation Army uniform. He didn't take me because I haven't worn a Salvation Army uniform in over a decade (long story). Anyway, The Salvation Army only had a limited number of invitations and the deacon figured all the Salvos should wear uniforms so that they would be easily identified. It was good PR, but I was a bit pissed that he didn't take me. :(

Thanks for the link to that test. Here I am, a Pinko Libertarian. :)

Philly: You landed almost exactly where I did. It must be proof of the old "great minds" adage.

Well, I don't know how to copy and post the image of my graph on the poltical scale, but I'm ever so slightly to the right side of the line (.38) and way down toward the libertarian pole (-7.33).

So I guess I'd call myself an extreme libertarian centrist.
